Edit Sections

To work with the sections, select Table of Contents in the lesson outline displayed on the left. The headings for the Table of Contents will then appear to the right. Follow the instructions below for specific tasks.

Rename Sections

  • Highlight the text of the section heading you want to change and type in the new name. (You can also backspace to delete the text, while preserving the bullet point, and then type in the new text.)
  • When you change a section heading name in the Table of Contents, it is likely you will break the link to the first page within that section. This is apparent when the text turns from blue to black, or is no longer hyperlinked. Here’s how you can repair the link to the first page in a section:
    • Highlight the section heading text.
    • Select the Link icon in the formatting toolbar at the top of the page.
    • Change the Protocol dropdown option to <other>.
    • Under URL, type the exact name of the first page in this section.
  • Select Update Table of Contents for the change to take effect.

Add Sections

  • Place your cursor at the end of the section heading that you want to precede the new section and press Enter on your keyboard. This will create a new, empty line in the bulleted list of headings.
  • Type your new section name. Then select Update Table of Contents.

Delete Sections

  • In the bulleted list of section headings, Delete the text for the section heading(s) for the section(s) you want to remove.
  • Select Update Table of Contents.
  • You’ll notice the change take effect in the main Table of Contents on the left.

Tip: This will not remove the pages in that section from the lesson, it will simply remove them from the lesson flow. Meaning, because nothing will be linking to these pages, they will not appear in the TOC and will not appear when you run the lesson. However, you’ll notice that you can still see them in the Alphabetical Index in CALI Author. If you want to completely remove the pages, after taking the steps above to remove the section(s), go to each page and delete it.

Reorder Sections

  • Select the section you want to move by highlighting the entire section heading name.
  • Use CTRL-X to cut it from its current position. Place your cursor in the new position for the section and copy using CRTL-V to paste.
  • Then select Update Table of Contents.

Add/Move Pages To a Section

You may want to add pages to a new section or just move pages to a different section. Use the following steps to:

  1. Change the first page of a section; or
  2. Add or move pages to a brand-new section.

Note: Use the Navigation setting to simply move pages between sections when it’s not the first page of a section. See the instructions on how to Reorder Pages.

The following steps set the first page of the section. Any pages that follow the page you set as the first page (according to the Navigation setting on each page) will follow.

  • Highlight the entire section heading text.
  • Select the Link icon in the formatting toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Change the Protocol dropdown option to <other>.
  • Under URL, type the exact name of the page you want to be the first page in the section.
    • Tip: The page must already exist in order to know its name and assign it here. If this is intended to be a brand new page, you will have to go back and create the page under an existing section first before proceeding with this step.
  • Select Update Table of Contents. Note that the change will not take effect until you complete the following step(s).
  • Go to the page that precedes the page you just chose as the first page of this section. In the Navigation section at the bottom, change the Next Page to whatever page should now follow instead. Then adjust any additional navigation as needed. By unlinking the preceding page from the page you want to start the new section,k the change will then take effect.
Example 1 – Move one page from the end of a section to a new section:
Old Section has Question 1 through Question 5 as its pages. You create New Section and want to move Question 5 to New Section. First you would link Question 5 to New Section in the Table of Contents following the instructions above. Then you would go to Question 4 and change the Next Page Navigation to Contents since it would be the last page in Old Section after having moved Question 5 to New Section.
Example 2 – Move two or more pages from the end of a section to a new section:
Old Section has Question 1 through Question 5 as its pages. You create New Section and want to move Question 3 through Question 5 to New Section. First you would link Question 3 to New Section in the Table of Contents following the instructions above. Then you would go to Question 2 and change the Next Page Navigation to Contents since it would be the last page in Old Section. Questions 4 and 5 will automatically follow Question 3 since they are still linked.
Example 3 – Move one or more pages from the middle of a section to a new section:
Old Section has Question 1 through Question 5 as its pages. You create New Section and want to move Question 3 through Question 4 to New Section, and keep Question 1, Question 2, and Question 5 in Old Section. First you would link Question 3 to New Section in the Table of Contents following the instructions above. Then you would go to Question 2 and change the Next Page Navigation to Question 5. Question 4 will automatically follow Question 3 to New Section since they are still linked. Change the Next Page Navigation for Question 4 to Contents – if it’s the last page in New Section, otherwise, change to whatever other page should follow – to unlink it from Question 5.

Example 4 – Move the first page in a section to a different section:
Old Section has Question 1 through Question 5 as its pages. You create New Section and want to move Question 1 to New Section, and keep Question 2, Question 3, Question 4 and Question 5 in Old Section. First you would link Question 1 to New Section in the Table of Contents following the instructions above. Then you would go to the Old Section heading and change the link from Question 1 to Question 2. Finally, change the Next Page Navigation for Question 1 to Contents – if it’s the last page in New Section, otherwise, change to whatever other page should follow – to unlink it from Question 2. Rename any pages as necessary.
